  • CHINA. Beijing. Chinese snooker player Ding Junhui backstage just before going to play at the China Snooker Open. Ding faces massive pressure as China's number 1 snooker player. He is as famous as Jackie Chan and Yao Ming and is always expected to perform. He famously broke down in tears during one match in 2007. Snooker is a cue sport played on a large table measuring 3.6 metres x 1.8 metres. Originating in India in the late 19th Century where it was invented by British Army officers, the game has been a mainstay in British sport over the past few decades. Recently however, popularity of the sport has declined as the sport struggles to compete with other popular sports. The sport is however flourishing in countries such as China, where it is now the second most popular sport, behind Basketball. In a country where the players are treated like movie-stars, China may be the great hope for the sports recovery. 2009

  • CHINA. Hubei Province. Wuhan. A monkey in an enclosure in Wuhan zoo. In many of China's 'second-tier' cities, away from the modern zoos in the megacities of Beijing and Shanghai, hide a plethora of smaller unknown zoos. In these zoos, what can only be described as animal abuse is subtly taking place in the form of deprivation of light, space, sanitation and social contact with other animals. Living in awful conditions, these animals spend there days entertaining tourists who seem oblivious to the animals' plight and squalid existence. 2008.

  • A young couple, Kelly Lu and Yanding Li, hold hands during a walk through Beijing's Olympic Park. "I'm pretty sad about this. It's worse and worse", explains Li. "I think the pollution is bad for our health. The PM2.5 damages our lungs [but] we don't have any choice", he laments. "I left China two and half years ago. Then it wasn't so bad. I've been abroad. I know what's good [air] and what's bad. Young people care more than old people. We have more information. We know how bad it is." PM2.5 reading - 218 - Very Unhealthy

  • A young boy puts his hands over his face near a dead fish on the shores of a beach in Funafuti. According to RNZ News in 2018, "The European Union has lifted a so-called "yellow card" it had given Tuvalu over its fisheries management. The lifting comes following improvements Tuvalu's made to fight illegal fishing. Tuvalu was issued the yellow card in December 2014, at risk of being considered a "non-cooperating country." Fish caught by vessels operating in these countries can't be imported into the EU. The European Commission said it recognised Tuvalu's progress in addressing shortcomings in its fisheries governance. It said the EU had been able to help Tuvalu combat illegal fishing through a range of measures. ." Funafuti, Tuvalu. March, 2019.
