CHINA. Beijing. A young orphan in an orphanage outside of Beijing. 2007. The orphanage is a mix of orphans and children left for long periods of time by migrant workers who cannot take their children with them. There are currently millions of orphans in China living in orphanages spread throughout the country. As a result of China's one-child policy, many children are abandoned or given up if they suffer from any physical or mental handicap as the parents strive to have a child born 'normal' and well. This has led to may children being abandoned to live in state and privately-owned orphanages.
